    In April 2021, the Indian social worker Gurdeep Kaur Singh received a few documents related to Swapna's fake PhD degree. The documents were sealed in an envelope and the sender’s name was not written on it. Gurdeep immediately filed a complaint against Swapna at a nearby police station. After Gurdeep's complaint, Swapna was arrested by the Mumbai police for possessing a fake PhD degree from Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University, Kanpur. Reportedly, based on her fake degree, she got a job in one of the top hospitals in Mumbai. During the hearing of the case in the Bombay High Court, Swapna said that the intrigant behind her arrest was Sanjay Raut. She said,
