Thomas Vanek (born 19 January ) is an Austrian former professional ice hockeywinger who played fourteen seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Buffalo Sabres, Columbus Blue Jackets, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders, and Vancouver Canucks. Vanek was drafted by the Sabres fifth overall in the NHL Entry Draft, making him the highest-drafted Austrian player in NHL history along with David Reinbacher in the NHL Entry Draft.[1]
Early life
[edit]Vanek was born in Baden bei Wien, Austria, to Slovak mother Jarmila and Czech father Zdeněk,[2] who emigrated from the Czechoslovakia to Austria in [3] He grew up in Zell am See (Salzburg) and in Graz (Styria), where his father played professional ice hockey.[4]
As a youth, he played in the and Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournaments with a team from Austria.[5] In , at the age of 14, he moved to Lacombe Alberta Canada.[6]
