Yet many of his supporting studies lack mundane realism and therefore applicability to a real world context, as they are often artificial tasks such as ‘have a conversation with a stranger’ and then ‘watch video footage of it and self-report on any inaccuracies or lies’. Surely this will lead to demand characteristics or some form of social desirability bias; a person under those conditions is unlikely to behave in the same way in a real situation and so therefore his assumptions lack ecological validity.     Robert S. Feldman is Professor of Psychology and Associate Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
