Whilst I do not doubt that Feldman is an established academic, and has found research to support his theories, there are methodological issues with a lot of his examples. The suggestion is that in any given 10 minute conversation a person will tell at least 3 lies; for example inflating experience to seem more interesting. Yet many of his supporting studies lack mundane realism and therefore applicability to a real world context, as they are often artificial tasks such as ‘have a conversation with a stranger’ and then ‘watch video footage of it and self-report on any inaccuracies or lies’. Surely this will lead to demand characteristics or some form of social desirability bias; a person under those conditions is unlikely to behave in the same way in a real situation and so therefore his assumptions lack ecological validity.     Robert S. Feldman is Professor of Psychology and Associate Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. A recipient of the College Distinguished Teacher Award, he teaches psychology classes ranging in size from 15 to nearly students.
