    An artist in a land of ice and snow

    Jorg Schmeisser traveled to Antarctica on the icebreaker Aurora Australis in The result was a series of works -- etchings, drawings and paintings -- that became "Breaking the Ice," a major exhibition showing in Kyoto and scheduled for Tokyo and Yokohama, that explores the majesty and uncanny beauty of the frozen continent.

    Schmeisser was born in Stolp, Germany (now Slupsk, Poland), in He grew up and studied art in Hamburg and came to Japan in the late s to Kyoto City University of Arts, where he is now professor. His many travels have taken him to the Middle East, China, Cambodia, the United States and Australia, where he first went in and eventually settled with his family.

    I have known Jorg since and followed his work with deep interest and admiration. His brilliant etching techniques have illuminated everything from the minute, jagged lines of earthenware shards found in the Holy Land to the elegant curves of mountain tops in Ladakh and the sweep of peneplain in Australia's red outback.

    In October I visited Jörg Schmeisser in his studio in Canberra, Australia. He had just returned from six years in Kyoto. Jörg was my etching teacher 25 years ago when we both taught at the Canberra School of Art. We have long planned to make a print when I was next in town; when I reminded him he welcomed my visit. In just a day I learnt liberating techniques for etching, which enabled me to make nine unique images using four perspex plates and two copper plates, a dental technician’s drill and a Dremel craft tool. From the master etcher this represented an exciting departure. I also had the privilege to see works from his Antarctic suite of prints, as well as drawings and paintings, the most beautiful works by Jörg Schmeisser that I have seen. I interviewed him there for Studio International and for my new book on Contemporary Drawing in Australia. The most recent works are a combination of drawn images, pastel, watercolour, with printmaking techniques as well. They are haunting and dynamic works.
