I need to get something off my chest. A secret so shameful that only my wife and a few close friends know about me. Something that would ruin my professional reputation, damage friendships, and devastate members of my family from sheer embarrassment. Something for which there is no known cure.
I love Christmas music.
It’s true. As long as I can remember, I’ve loved holiday music, and it doesn’t show signs of stopping.
It all started innocently enough, really around the time I was 6 or 7 years old. My elementary school music teacher was also the choir director at our church, which meant that I started getting put on stage to sing and perform before finishing first grade. As you might expect, putting little kids on stage at church is less about holiness and faith, and more about incorporating a cute distraction from the upcoming sermon, as well as a justifiable reason for the elderly and parents to come to Sunday Service that week.
For me, it was about having something to actually do on Sunday mornings, instead of just getting dressed up to go sit in an uncomfortable pew for an hour or so. And hey, if I got a little extra attention for my efforts and a celebratory lunch from McDonalds afterward, great.
