Villiers was the third son of Sir George Villiers (c. –) of Brooksby, Leicestershire, by his second marriage, to Mary Beaumont (c. –), later created Countess of Buckingham. He had two full brothers, George Villiers, successively Viscount Villiers (), then Earl, Marquess, and finally Duke of Buckingham, and John Villiers, first Viscount Purbeck, as well as a sister, Susan, later the countess of William Feilding, 1st Earl of Denbigh; while Sir Edward Villiers and William Villiers were his half-brothers.[1]

Villiers was born in London, the son of Wing commander David Hugh Villiers (–) by his second wife, Elizabeth Barbara (née Hobbins). He is a descendant of the Right Reverend Henry Montagu Villiers, Bishop of Durham from , brother of George Villiers, 4th Earl of Clarendon, and Charles Pelham Villiers. He is the brother of Cat Villiers, a film producer, and Jay Villiers, also an actor. Through Henry Montagu Villiers' mother, the brothers descend from Oliver Cromwell. He was educated at Stowe School.

Villiers may be best known for his former role in Emmerdale, in which he played Grayson Sinclair.
