Blues Traveler signed with A&M Records in November 1989. Patrick Clifford signed them for A&M. At the time of their signing, Blues Travler as playing about 20 concerts per month and had built a regional audience.
The Blues Traveler album sold more than 100,000 copies without much promotion. It was supported by concerts where Blues Traveler opened for established rock bands.
In 1991 they played nearly 250 concerts.
Travelers and Thieves spent more than three months on Billboard's Heatseekers chart. In February 1992, Blues Traveler did a three-week tour of Europe where they played 20 concerts. In the U.S. they toured colleges.
Four was released in September 1994. It sold 393,000 units by May 1995.
